Mbappe chasing Ronaldo‘s record in Real

The Real's striker has five more games to break the record

When you look at the kind of seasons Cristiano Ronaldo had at Real Madrid, you think that the Santiago Bernabeu will never again see such a goal machine, and that it will be hard for anyone to appear who could strike as much fear into opposing defenses as the miraculous Portuguese once did. However, when you look at what Kylian Mbappe is doing right now, it makes your blood run cold. Whatever he does with the ball, it ends up in the net. At this moment, without any doubt, there is no player on the planet in better form—no offense to Erling Haaland, but not even the Norwegian looks as dominant as Kylian.

After all, the numbers speak for themselves. Against Athletic Bilbao he scored twice in a 3–0 win and reached the figure of 55 goals in 2025 in the same number of matches—an unreal statistic. Equally incredible is the fact that the Frenchman is chasing Cristiano Ronaldo. The Paris-born star is just five goals away from overtaking Cristiano and writing history. If he reaches 60 goals, Kylian will become the player with the most goals in a calendar year in the history of Real Madrid. Ronaldo currently stands at 59, and what the two superstars have in common is the fact that both average one goal per game.

In just over a year, Mbappe has done so much that it can already be said that Real is a team resting on his shoulders—just as it was when Cristiano was there. All credit to everyone else, but the man nicknamed “Donatello” scored in every final last season, bagged a hat-trick in El Clasico at the Camp Nou, became La Liga’s top scorer and won the European Golden Boot with 31 goals (Viktor Gyokeres scored more, but goals in the Portuguese league are worth 1.5 points, while in the top five leagues they are worth two). It should also be added that with 44 goals in all competitions, he set a personal record.

Now all that remains for him is to overtake Ronaldo, and he has five matches to do it. The schedule is not overly difficult. Real will face Celta and Sevilla, Manchester City at the Bernabeu, while away they will play Alaves, followed by a Copa del Rey match a week later. In some things he has already surpassed the Portuguese star—he has scored more goals than Cristiano did in 2010 (46), 2016 (42), 2017 (41), and 2018 (44). The Royal Club has had many Frenchmen in its ranks (Karim Benzema, Zinedine Zidane, Raymond Kopa, Claude Makelele, Raphael Varane, and many others). Some became club icons, some left little mark, but one thing is certain—few have been such a scourge for opposing defenses as Kylian Mbappe. He is not just scoring goals—he is writing the history of the greatest club in the world.
