PSG fire blanks in Bilbao, but stay on the road to Champions League title defence

European champions Paris Saint-Germain were left frustrated at San Mames on Wednesday night after failing to convert their dominance into goals, though Luis Enrique's side remains well placed in the race for the Champions League knockout stage. PSG sit third in the overall standings, just one point inside the top eight, while struggling Athletic Bilbao languish in 28th and face the real prospect of elimination.

PSG controlled long stretches of the match and created the better chances, but Unai Simon proved an immovable obstacle in the hosts' goal. Fabian Ruiz sent two promising efforts over the bar, while Simon produced strong saves to keep out Senny Mayulu on both sides of half-time.

The clearest opening fell to Bradley Barcola, who burst through on goal only to crash his powerful strike against the crossbar. Ruiz came closest to breaking the deadlock late on, but Simon once again denied him before Yuri Berchiche completed the defensive stand with a crucial goal-line clearance.

Athletic Club struggled to threaten and managed just one shot on target - a late attempt from Asier Hierro - leaving them two points adrift of the play-off positions with time running out.
