Police coach explains why team signed former Harambee Stars defender

The veteran joined the side in the off-season following stints in Tanzania
Kenya Police FC coach Etienne Ndayiragije believes former Gor Mahia defender Joash Onyango will inspire the team to greatness this season.
Onyango is one of the new signings by the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) champions after a stint in Tanzania where he played for Simba and Singida Big Stars.

Ndayigarije pointed out that Onyango’s experience at the continental level will be a big motivation to the rest of the players.
“He is a very experienced player especially as far as continental football is concerned having played for Tanzanian giants Simba, and we expect him to push our young players majority of whom are under-25,” he said in an interview at Nyayo Stadium on Friday.
Onyango moved to Tanzania in 2019 after three successful seasons with Gor Mahia.
He stayed at Simba for three seasons before joining Fountain Gate for one year.
He spent another season at Singida Big Stars before moving to Pamba Jiji last year and returned home after the end of contract.
The Kenya Police coach, who leads his side against Mogadishu City in Saturday’s CAF Champions League preliminary round, said they are not underrating their opponents, and will go all out and pick a comfortable victory to cushion them in the return leg.
“Last year, the team made it to the first round of the Confederations Cup and obviously we would like to do better. We watched our opponents during the CECAFA club championships and my opinion is that they are a big team and we respect them,” he said.
He also admitted that his side may not be at their peak, but remains confident the three matches they played during the regional tournament in Tanzania has prepared them well.
“We have not had the kind of pre-season we would have wanted, but I believe we got what we needed during the CECFA tournament.”
