The full-back had spent years in the lower tiers, with his dream move to the top level coming in February

Full-back Billy Owuor has officially become a free agent after his contract with Mara Sugar FC expired, bringing to an end a significant chapter in his career with the FKF Premier League side, after numerous seasons in the second tier.

Owuor joined Mara from Kisumu All Stars during the 2026 mid-season transfer window as coach Edward Manoah sought to strengthen his squad.

With his contract now expired, Owuor leaves Awendo grateful for the opportunity to represent the ambitious club and convinced that his spell with Mara Sugar has helped him grow both on and off the pitch.

"Playing for Mara Sugar has been a great experience for me..

I have learned a lot from the coaches, my teammates, and the challenges that come with competing at a high level. Every training session and every match helped me improve as a player and as a person," he said.

The former All Stars skipper reflects fondly on his time at the club, highlighting the team's fighting spirit and the support he received throughout his stay.

"I am thankful to everyone at Mara Sugar; the management, technical bench, players, and supporters. They welcomed me and gave me the platform to express myself. I will always appreciate the memories we created together."

While closing one chapter, Owuor believes the time is right to embrace a fresh challenge as he enters the next phase of his career.

"Now I feel ready for a new challenge. The experience I gained at Mara Sugar has prepared me well, and I am excited about what comes next. I remain ambitious, and I am looking forward to the next opportunity where I can continue growing and helping a team achieve its goals."

At just the right stage of his career, and with the transfer window wide open, Owuor is expected to attract interest from clubs seeking a marauding full-back with top-flight experience and a strong desire to develop further.

Owuor’s departure comes after a period in which Mara Sugar continues to establish themselves as a competitive force in the FKF Premier League.

The club, despite coaching changes in the mid-season, demonstrated resilience throughout the campaign, securing important results against more experienced top-flight sides and reinforcing its reputation as one of the league's ambitious projects.
