Coastal Union's qualification for the CAF interclub competition ended a 36-year hiatus, having previously competed in 1988

Coastal Union's head coach, David Ouma, is overjoyed after leading the club to a fourth place finish in the NBC Premier League and qualification for the CAF Confederations Competition next season in his first season in Tanzania.

The former Sofapaka coach joined the Tanga-based team in November last year after leaving the 2009 league champions.

The former Harambee Starlets tactician was charged with leading the 'Wagosi wa Kaya', as they are known locally, to a top-four finish in his debut season with the club.

When Ouma took charge at the Tanga-based club, Coastal was in danger of relegation, with only seven points to show after playing 13 league matches.

However, seven months later, the former Posta Rangers gaffer transformed Union's woes into success, steering the Tanzanian club to ten wins and six draws in his 21 games in charge.

Union ended the campaign fourth on the 16-team league log with 43 points after a scoreless draw against Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) on the final day of the Tanzanian NBC Premier League season played on Tuesday evening.

Furthermore, the knowledgeable tactician capped off his debut season in Tanzania with a CAF Confederations Competition qualification slot for the next season.

Aside from Coastal Union, Simba SC will also participate in the Confederations Cup, while NBC Premier League champions Yanga SC and Azam Football Club will compete in the Champions League.

Ouma couldn't contain his excitement during an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sports, expressing his happiness with the season's accomplishments.

"It's fulfilling to end the season at a higher notch considering the team had a slow start to the campaign by the time I joined the club," he said.

Ouma is no stranger to the continental football scene, having previously guided Sofapaka in 2011 and Kenya's women's national side, Harambee Starlets, in 2016.

Coastal Union's qualification for the CAF interclub competition ended a 36-year hiatus, having previously competed in 1988.

"I am overjoyed to have finished fourth on the log and secured a spot in next season's CAF Confederations interclub competitions. It is a great way to finish the season after a rough start," he said.
