Otewa retires from active football

Former Bandari captain and long serving defender Duncan Otewa has announced his retirement from active football after running out his contract with the club.

Otewa was reduced to a free agent last month after the club opted not to extend his contract bringing to an end his more than decade long stay as a player to an end.

Besides letting him go, the coastal outfit released Khamis Mwinyi and Abdallah Matano following the expiry of their contracts. 

Other players who left are Dan Guya who joined Sofapaka while Yema Mwamba decamped to Kakamega Homeboyz. Wilberforce Lugogo was loaned out to Sofapaka.

Having stayed with Bandari through thick and thin, Otewa who back in March revealed that he will never switch his allegiance said he elected to hang his boots.

Impeccable sources at the club suggest that the right back is likely to be integrated in the technical bench even as he seeks to head into class for his coaching badges.

"I have taken the decision to leave the stage for younger players to get the platform and showcase their talents. My next stop will be coaching, something I promised myself to venture in after retirement," he said.

Otewa joined Bandari in 2010 from National Super League side Modern Coast Rangers and exits with a number of winners medals on his neck thanks to their triumph in the domestic Cup.

He was named the club skipper in 2015 but relinquished the role to Felly Mulumba three years later, and before his stay expired, he was the second assistant to Bernard Odhiambo.

Despite having made up his mind, the Bandari Youth graduate is still training with the club just to keep fit.

"I exit the competitive stage with my head high for the achievements I have managed with the club. I know what it means to win, lose, tackle challenges and how to handle success. I sincerely thank Bandari for the years they have given me the platform and everything they have done in my football career, "he added.
