The Harambee Stars captain has already won two golden boots in Qatar
Michael Olunga has set his sights on bagging a third straight golden boot in Qatar, with the 2023–24 season underway.
The player is already joint top scorer in the league three matches in with four goals. He has scored in all the games for the defending champions and appears to be in contention for the boot earlier in the season.
Olunga won the 2021–22 season golden boot after scoring 24 goals and defended it last season, scoring two goals shy of the previous campaign. His goal-scoring exploits have made him one of the best strikers not only in Qatar but on the Asian continent as a whole.
The player is in the country preparing for the friendly game against Qatar scheduled for Thursday in Doha, and in an interview, the Stars captain discussed his ambition to once again bag a record-setting golden boot in Qatar.
"As a player and a striker, I always aim to be the best every time I step onto the field. I've won it twice in a row, and winning it for the third time would make history and set a record in Qatar, as no other player has ever achieved this feat," he said in a press conference at the Harambee Stars camp in Nairobi.
He added that a chance to become the first player to win the Golden Boot for a third time is a big motivation for him.
"I always strive to be a record-breaker wherever I go, which gives me the motivation to work hard this season. I've started the season well, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. So, I'm not settling for anything less than the golden boot. I feel in good condition to defend it, and it provides me with an opportunity to become a record-breaker. It would be fantastic to accomplish that," he added.
Olunga will have a chance to add to his league tally when Duhail take on Al Gharafa in a league match on the 24th of September away from home.
