Kenya last lost a match in November 2023 in a World Cup qualification game away to Gabon
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga takes great pleasure from the fact that the senior national team has not lost a match this year and hopes that they will use the form and confidence to their advantage against Cameroon.
Kenya last lost a match in November 2023 in a World Cup qualification game away to Gabon. Perhaps the other loss was against Comoros in the COSAFA Cup in June where Kenya was represented by the Under-23 side.
The Al Duhail man believes that the team built by head coach Engin Firat in the last two years is now ready to take on the big boys in the continent.
“The team is good, we have been building for quite some time now and you can see we have not lost a game for over nine months now and we have young players coming into the team and blending with the experienced ones which is good for Kenyan football,” said Olunga.
The former Gor Mahia talisman expressed his pleasure with the fact that most of the players in the team who were injured like himself have recovered and together as a team, they are ready for the Cameroon clash
“For the first time, we have almost the full squad back but again you realize all players are capable of representing the national team as you saw in the last two games.
Everyone in the team is ready. Cameroon is one of the strongest teams in the continent but all of us are determined to give our best.
We all have four points and as we start away, all of us are psyched up and believe we are going to get something positive,” he added.
The former Girona striker was absent in Harambee Stars' first two group matches against Zimbabwe and Namibia due to a thigh injury and was greatly missed by coach Firat who opted to play without a striker in the match against The Warriors.
He hopes to continue with his scoring form that has seen him score in two successive games for his club in the national team after recovering.
“It feels good to be back to represent the country once again, each time the call-ups are made, you want to be there but unfortunately I couldn't make it in the last two fixtures but I'm glad to be back in action.
It was a difficult moment for me, I started the league well but got sidelined with a thigh injury but now I am back and scored in back-to-back games and I just hope I will bring the same to the national team,” he stated.
Additionally, the former Tusker striker called on Kenyans to rally behind the team and avoid directing any negative energy to the team
“We call for support from Kenyans and not the negative talks that sometimes are directed to the team. We ask them to be patient and promise that we will give 100%.”
