Oduor lauds Harambee Starlets' grit in big win over Burundi

Harambee Starlets assistant coach Godfrey Oduor was pleased with the team’s display in their 3-0 win over Burundi in their opening CECAFA Women’s Championship match played at the Azam Sports Complex in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

A brace from Martha Amunyolet and another goal from Faith Mboya sealed Kenya’s win over Burundi, who came into the game having beaten Uganda 1-0 in their opening match played on Friday at the same venue.
Kenya’s preparations for the tournament had been hampered by uncertainties over impending changes in the technical bench, some players withdrawing, and the team having just one training session, with only 12 players in attendance, before flying to Tanzania.
On Sunday, however, they put their woes behind them and put up a show against Burundi, earning a win that leaves them third on the table behind hosts Tanzania and Uganda, who thrashed South Sudan 5-0 on Sunday evening.
In his post-match interview, Oduor, who replaced Jackline Juma as Starlets’ assistant coach just before the team flew to Tanzania, expressed his happiness, saying the technical bench was satisfied and urged the players to maintain the same spirit in the coming games.
“We are satisfied and happy because we have committed players. We thank and congratulate them, and urge them to do even better in the coming games so that we can get results that will make everyone happy," remarked Oduor.
Ahead of Starlets’ next game against Uganda, Oduor says they will first assess the players for any injuries before fully focusing on the Tuesday night showdown at the Azam Complex.
“We will now monitor our players and assess the state they are in because some played for 90 minutes and could be in pain. We need to check on them as we prepare for the game against Uganda," he said.
After playing Uganda on Tuesday, 17 June, they will face South Sudan on Thursday, 19 June, and host Tanzania on Saturday, 21 June, in their remaining group fixtures.
Tanzania remains the most decorated nation in CECAFA Women’s Championship history, having won two titles.
Kenya, Uganda, and Zanzibar have each won the tournament once.
