Game week 22 kicks off this afternoon with a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash as leaders Mombasa United host third-placed Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA) at Mbaraki Sports Club, with kick-off set for 2PM EAT.

The fixture carries enormous significance for both sides, who are chasing a historic first promotion to the top flight.

With just a handful of matches left in the campaign, maximum points could prove decisive in shaping the promotion narrative that began seven months ago.

MOFA head into the encounter relatively fresh after not being in action last weekend following the withdrawal of Mully Children’s Family from the league.

However, the Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga-backed outfit faces the daunting task of becoming the first side to beat Mombasa United at home this season.

Under the guidance of coach Gilbert Selebwa, Mombasa has turned Mbaraki into a fortress, winning their last 10 home matches.

Their dominance on home soil has been central to their rise to the summit.

MOFA, coached by Charles Bruno, boasts an impressive away record of their own. The White Rhinos have lost just twice on the road this season.

In their last five away matches, they have picked up four wins and one draw, showing their resilience outside Homa Bay.

The first meeting between the two sides still lingers in memory. MOFA thrashed United 4-0 in Kisumu, a result that sent a strong statement in the title race.

Selebwa says his players are drawing motivation from both their home record and the magnitude of the contest.

We are still unbeaten at home, and that’s the first motivation for my team. Also, the fact that we are playing against title contenders is another motivation. I call upon Mombasa people to show up in large numbers and support us, and, God willing, I am sure we will get the maximum points,” said Selebwa.

The tactician believes victory would significantly strengthen their grip at the top.

“If we win against MOFA, we will open a new page since the difference between us and them will increase from five to eight points. That will give us leverage as we move on because for them to catch us again, it would mean we lose three matches, which I think is close to impossible.”

Selebwa did not shy away from revisiting the heavy first-leg defeat.

In the first leg we lost against them in a game that had its own issues. But now we are at home. It’s payback time, and they should expect a different treatment here in Mombasa.”
