Permanent Secretary for Interior, Raymond Omollo, shared the progress on his socials, highlighting several key developments.

According to Omollo, the stadium is currently undergoing road works, reinforced concrete beam installations on the southern stand, structural formwork, and the construction of the Western VIP pavilion, which is nearing completion pending canopy installation.

The upgrade will see the stadium’s seating capacity expand from 10,000 to 15,000 and incorporate FIFA-standard infrastructure, including modern floodlights, media facilities, and international-specification changing rooms.

"In the City of Champions, Eldoret, the transformation of the Kipchoge Keino Stadium reaffirms the Government's deliberate investment in sports and talent development as a driver of national pride and economic growth," Omollo posted.

"This historic multi-purpose facility is undergoing a major upgrade to position it as a world-class venue and a key training and backup site for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations."

The project, which has engaged approximately 400 workers on site, underscores the government’s commitment to job creation and the stimulation of local economic activity.

Beyond infrastructure, the stadium is set to become a hub for sports tourism, benefiting Eldoret’s hospitality, transport, and service sectors while cementing the city’s reputation as a global athletics center.

Named after legendary Kenyan athlete Kipchoge Keino, the stadium is the only public facility in the North Rift with a synthetic track, serving as a primary training ground for elite distance runners.

Its strategic importance has also been recognised in preparation for the 36th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled from June 19 to July 18, 2027, which Kenya will co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

Valued at approximately Ksh3.5 billion, the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, ahead of its pivotal role in the continental tournament.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has been actively involved, ensuring that emergency preparedness frameworks and public safety standards are embedded in the stadium’s design to support major local and international events.
