The struggling side had turned to Mafuta in December 2025, in a bid to revive their season, but his tenure failed to deliver the desired turnaround.
His first match in charge ended in a 2-0 defeat to Gucha Stars, setting the tone for a difficult spell at the helm.
Mafuta had taken over from Martin Mutembei, who guided the NSL returnees in the opening five months of the campaign but left them rooted at the bottom of the table with just seven points.
The former APS Bomet tactician arrived alongside Ochieng, with the duo having previously worked together during the 2024/2025 season where they successfully guided the Black Berets to the top tier.
However, months into the job, the experienced coach was unable to steady the ship, with results continuing to falter.
The club has now opted for a change in direction as the fight to avoid relegation intensifies.
In 19 matches in charge, Mafuta managed four wins, two draws and 13 defeats, and leaves Mwatate 19th on 21 points, level with 18th placed MCF, with just 10 matches remaining in the season.
In a statement confirming the decision, the club cited underwhelming results despite acknowledging the efforts made during his tenure.
“Mwatate United FC can confirm that it has parted ways with Head Coach Mafuta. This decision follows an internal review of the team’s performances and progress in relation to the club’s objectives and expectations. While there have been positive moments during Coach Mafuta’s tenure, the club believes that results and overall development have not met the standards required.
We would like to place on record our sincere appreciation to Coach Mafuta for his professionalism, commitment and efforts during his time with the club, and we wish him every success in his future endeavours.
Further communication regarding the technical bench will be made in due course. Mwatate United FC remains fully committed to its competitive objectives and appreciates the continued support of its fans, partners and stakeholders.”
The club also confirmed the departure of Ochieng, who doubled up as trainer and team manager, citing similar reasons following an internal review.
The duo’s final match in charge came on Saturday, when Mwatate fell 2-1 to FC Talanta at Dandora Stadium.
Meanwhile, Mozzart Sport understands that Kabati Youth are also set to part ways with head coach Haji Bilal after a string of poor results that has dragged the team into the relegation zone.
