The win, inspired by substitute Stewart Omondi’s second-half strike, brought relief and renewed confidence in the Jackson Gacheru-coached side, who had endured a four-match winless streak before this fixture.
For City Stars, the defeat compounded their misery, marking a third straight loss in a poor run of form.
The game started on a lively note, with both sides probing for early openings.
Talanta, powered by the Communication Authority of Kenya, appeared hungrier from the onset, pressing high and dictating the tempo.
Otieno Phelix was a constant menace on the left flank, delivering dangerous balls into the box for forwards Alex Kipruto and Iyan Nyongesa, whose early efforts narrowly missed the target.
City Stars gradually grew into the game, with Luke Namanda orchestrating moves from midfield and combining well with fullback Steve Bulugu down the right.
Their best first-half moment came in the 24th minute when Namanda’s curling attempt forced Talanta goalkeeper Peter Juma into a fingertip save, drawing applause from the few fans in attendance.
The second half resumed with Talanta still on the front foot.
The turning point came in the 63rd minute when substitute Omondi, who had just been introduced, made an immediate impact.
Picking a clever pass from Austin Oduor, Omondi drifted past two defenders before slotting calmly beyond City Stars’ goalkeeper Livingstone, sending the home bench into jubilation.
The goal awakened the visitors, who poured men forward in search of an equaliser.
Suleiman Ali and Namanda both came close, while Bulugu’s low drive in the 80th minute was well parried by Juma, who remained composed and alert throughout.
Despite late pressure, Talanta held firm to secure their first win over City Stars since December 2022, when they triumphed 2-1 in a top-flight fixture.
The victory now lifts Talanta to sixth position on the log with nine points, while City Stars drop to 13th with six points after three consecutive defeats.
It was a statement win for Gacheru’s men, who will now look to build on the momentum in the next match day, while City Stars will be desperate to turn things around in their next outing.
