The Englishman led Bayern to a 3-1 triumph with a brace in a game in which the Bavarians demonstrated dominance

Despite the fact that Chelsea are World Champions, Bayern Munich were at another level tonight - much higher than the Blues. The Bavarians controlled the game from the beginning to the end, losing the edge only briefly midway through the first half, when Chelsea managed to score over Cole Palmer and reduce the gap provided to the home crew by Trevoh Chalobah's own goal and Harry Kane's spot-kick.

Enzo Maresca's men awaited the break, being 2-1 down, but with a hope they could bring home at least a point from Munich. However, their dreams were crushed shortly, as Bayern dominated the second half, scoring the third goal in the 63rd minute over Kane, and wasting several other decent chances.

By the end of the game, Palmer could have completed a brace at the last minute had he not been offside, but, in general, Bayern's victory was never doubtful.

Apart from Serge Gnabry and Marc Cucurella's mild attempts, nothing notable happened in the opening 20 minutes of the clash at Allianz Arena. However, once the clock hit the 20-minute mark, both Bayern and Chelsea turned up the heat.

The Bavarians broke the deadlock thanks to clumsy Trevoh Chalobah, who put the ball into his own net, following Michael Olise's whipped low cross. Still, only seven minutes later, the home crew doubled the lead!

Harry Kane stole the ball on the edge of the Blues' box, and Moises Caicedo fouled him inside the area, trying to stop him. The ref Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez had no doubt, pointing to the spot, and the England national team captain sent it home, making it 2-0.

Nevertheless, Enzo Maresca's crew managed to bounce back just two minutes later and keep its hope alive! Cole Palmer initiated a hasty counterattack, played a one-two pass with Malo Gusto, and smashed the ball into Manuel Neuer's top-right corner.

Until the break, the Bavarians mainly controlled the game, but the result did not change.

Vincent Kompany didn't want to risk anything, so he replaced his only booked player, Jonathan Tah, with Kim Min-jae at the break. Just six minutes later, the Belgian was forced to make another sub and replace the injured Josip Stanisic with Sacha Boey.

Still, it didn't change much in Bayern's approach, as Kane wasted a massive one-on-one chance that Konrad Laimer prepared for him after a quick fastbreak in the 57th minute, allowing Robert Sanchez to stop his effort in a situation that could have sealed the deal for the Bavarians. Three minutes later, the Spanish custodian did wonders again, superbly blocking Michael Olise's close-range strike.

However, those misses didn't dishearten the Bavarians, who managed to score the third goal in the 63rd minute, again over Kane! The Englishman exploited Malo Gusto's colossal mistake and a poor back pass, punishing the Frenchman's mistake with a routine finish.

Maresca reacted instantly subbing in Alejandro Garnacho and Andrey Santos for Pedro Neto and Reece James, but it was clear that the Italian was late. The Blues' last chance came in the last minute when Palmer scored, but was offside and his goal didn't stand.

Chelsea's ships had already sailed and the London side opened their first UCL campaign after a one-year break with a defeat. Conversely, Bayern couldn't have imagined a batter start, especially since they faced such a strong opponent.
