While Lionel Scaloni's men were celebrating their victory over England, Bellingham lost his composure and tried to get into a physical confrontation with Valentin Barco

Stay humble in victory and dignified in defeat, says a well-known sports proverb.

Unfortunately, last night, during and especially after the second World Cup semi-final, not all players lived up to this principle.

On-pitch provocations and taunting are an integral and unavoidable part of football. And when the rivals are two nations with a troubled shared history like Argentina and England, the whole affair is taken to another level.

Either way, players should keep in mind that they represent their country and must act accordingly, maintaining their composure.

Last night, Jude Bellingham failed.

After the match, while the Argentinians celebrated their triumph, the Real Madrid superstar snapped and slapped La Albiceleste defender Valentin Barco on the head, sparking a melee on the pitch.

And even though the English media tried to justify his actions by claiming that the Strasbourg player had been taunting his opponents throughout the match - following Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez's goals, and after the final whistle - Bellingham's behaviour was beneath the reputation of the team he represents and the magnitude of the World Cup semi-final stage.

A global star and a role model for millions, Jude should have known better.
