Mathare United’s latest acquisition, Kevin Ouru, has revealed that professionalism and the club’s attractive style of play were the key factors behind his decision to sign for the 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions.

The former Kenya U-20 international was officially unveiled on Thursday, penning a one-year deal with the Slum Boys as part of the club’s rebuilding process.

Speaking after his presentation, Ouru disclosed he had long harboured ambitions of joining Mathare United, but opted against making the switch during the mid-season window due to Posta Rangers’ precarious situation at the time.

“It was my desire all along during my days at Kariobangi Sharks to join Mathare United. This is because, just as at Sharks, Mathare has the same playing style and professionalism. I also spoke with Daniel Ange, who encouraged me to make the move, but I had to hold on during the mid-season because of Posta Rangers’ situation at that time,” Ouru explained.

The 22-year-old shot-stopper, who previously featured for Green Commandoes before his stints with Sharks and Rangers, now sets his sights on elevating Mathare to a top-five finish this coming season.

He believes the foundation laid during last season’s impressive return from the National Super League, where the club secured 10th place with 42 points, provides the perfect platform for further progress.

"My ambitions are to steer the club to a better position than last season. Finishing below 10th won’t be an achievement, but pushing higher up the log will be a big step forward. I want to be part of that success, even aiming for the top five, and who knows, maybe even the title. Leicester did it in the Premier League, and so can we,” he added optimistically.

Reflecting on his time at Posta Rangers, Ouru credited the relegation fight with toughening him mentally, an experience he believes will serve him and Mathare well.

"At Posta I learnt a lot; I became mentally stronger because I had never been in such situations before. I worked hard to ensure I wasn’t the player blamed for the team going down, as that damages both one’s reputation and market value. That mental growth will now be an asset for Mathare,” he noted.

Ouru will now compete for the starting role with seasoned custodian Robert Mboya and fellow new signing Daniel Odiwour from Bidco United, as Mathare United aim to build a solid goalkeeping department ahead of the new campaign.
