Placed in Group B alongside Azam SC of Tanzania and AS Maniema Union of DR Congo, a strong start for the Nicholas Muyoti-coached side could pave the way for a historic berth to the last 16, a feat no Kenyan club has yet achieved.
Muyoti will rely on the experience of Harambee Stars forward Ovella Ochieng, goalkeeper Kevin Oduor, as well as the quitent of Enock Machaka, Duncan Omalla, Lennox Ogutu, and Isaac Ouma to lead the FKF-PL debutants to a memorable victory.
However, the challenge will be far from easy. The reigning Mozzart Bet Cup champions face a seasoned campaigner in Wydad AC, the 2022 CAFCC winners, who will be eager to begin the tournament on a strong footing in pursuit of a second continental medal.
The Moroccan side boasts an array of star talent, including Thembinkosi Lorch, Nordin Amrabat, Mohamed Rayhi, and Hakim Ziyech, all of whom will look to assert their authority and test Nairobi United’s mettle.
While this will be the first meeting between the two clubs, the clash represents a renewed rivalry between Kenya and North African football powerhouses.
Naibois as they are commonly fond of will be eager to break new ground, while Wydad AC aims to maintain continental dominance, setting the stage for an enthralling encounter.
The 2024/25 National Super League winners earned their place in the group stage after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over two-time winners Étoile Sportive du Sahel, winning 7–6 after a 2–2 aggregate draw.
United had won the first leg 2–0 at Ulinzi Complex before succumbing to a 2–0 defeat in Tunis.
Wydad AC, coached by Mohamed Amine Benhachem, booked their spot after thumping Asante Kotoko 6–1 on aggregate, securing a 1–0 victory in Accra before a 5–1 demolition in Morocco.
This clash, set to unfold at Larbi Zaouli Stadium, with 10:00 pm kickoff promises to be a high octane affair as maximum points are up for grabs for a solid start for the 2025/26 edition.
