The Wydad ultras stole the show at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday, 8 February, during their CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) match against Nairobi United.

From the first minute, they cheered on their team with their vociferous chants, but the moment of reckoning came in the 83rd minute when they lit flares and pyrotechnics that stunned Kasarani and forced the match to be stopped for over a minute.

Speaking after the match, Mzee, who captained Naibois in the match, weighed in on the visiting fans’ support.

“It (the ultras support) was worse when we played away (in Casablanca). It is something our fans may pick up even as we grow the game. It is an atmosphere that every footballer would like to play in,” said Mzee.

Just four seasons ago, Mzee was turning out for National Super League (NSL) side Kibera Black Stars before switching to Nairobi City Stars in the 2023/24 season.

The midfielder was handed an opportunity to feature and compete against African giants this season, courtesy of joining Naibois, a transformation he believes should encourage young players.

“Coming from Nairobi City Stars, it is a plus for me to play on this stage. To the upcoming players, they should keep working hard, and their dreams will come true,” he stated.

Despite the joy of captaining his team for the first time, the 1-0 defeat left him dejected, but he chose to pick up lessons from the narrow loss.

“We gave our best, but it was not enough to get a win. Wydad is a big team on the continent with players of high caliber where you learn a lot playing against them.”

Naibois will complete their group stage journey on Sunday with a clash against AS Maniema before embarking on league assignments as well as defending the Mozzart Bet Cup title.

“We have not had a good run in the league; we must up our game when we finish our CAF assignments.

We have to do well in order to return to continental football, whether it is the CAF Confederation Cup (CAF CC) or CAF Champions League (CAF CL).”
