Ochieng steps into the Basque Derby
Elsewhere in Spain, Kenyan international Job Ochieng continued his steady integration at Real Sociedad, coming on in stoppage time as La Real secured a 1-0 first-leg victory over Athletic Bilbao in their Copa del Rey semi-final clash.
Benat Turrientes struck the decisive goal in the second half of the tightly contested Basque derby at San Mames. The visitors looked more composed across the two halves and now hold a slender advantage ahead of the return leg at the Anoeta on March 4.
Real Sociedad, unbeaten in 10 matches since Pellegrino Matarazzo took charge in mid-December, was sharp in attack but had to contend with an inspired performance from Athletic’s second-choice goalkeeper Alex Padilla, who deputized for Unai Simon.
Carlos Soler’s interception initiated the move that led to the goal, releasing Goncalo Guedes, whose clever chip over Padilla fell kindly for Turrientes to tap into an empty net.
Guedes, however, picked up an injury after assisting the goal, paving the way for Ochieng’s introduction in the 95th minute.
The appearance comes just days after the former Ligi Ndogo player made his La Liga debut, marking a promising week in his young European career.
The winner of the tie will face either Atletico Madrid or Barcelona in the final.
Oduor impresses in Grimsby Victory
In England, Clarke Oduor featured prominently as Grimsby Town strengthened their League Two play-off push with a narrow 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley at Blundell Park.
Oduor came on in the 69th minute, replacing George McEachran, as the Mariners extended their unbeaten league run to nine matches.
Tyrell Sellars-Fleming’s 58th-minute strike proved decisive, cutting in from the left before firing in off the near post to hand Grimsby a vital three points that moved them within touching distance of the playoff spots.
The match took another turn in the 86th minute when Devon Matthews received a straight red card for a heavy challenge on Oduor, effectively ending Accrington’s hopes of mounting a late comeback.
Oduor completed 75 percent of his passes, successfully delivering three out of four attempts. He won both of his ground duels, claimed one aerial duel from two attempts, and contributed defensively despite failing to win his only tackle attempt.
He was fouled once, lost possession twice, and registered a total carrying distance of 18.3 meters. He made two carries, including one progressive carry that covered 13.7 meters, with his longest progressive run measuring 11 meters.
The appearance marked his first since January, having missed matches against MK Dons and Newport following his outing against Colchester.
