Muller: 'If we play like this in the second leg, we are going through'

Bayern Munich forward is full of optimism after last night's defeat from PSG

Efficiency is everything in football. If you have it, you only need 6 shots to score three goals in the Champions League match against the current champions. Like PSG did. If you don’t have it, you can take 31 shots, and still manage only two goals. Like Bayern did last night.

In a thrilling match of the Champions League quarter-final, PSG won at Allianz Arena, with Kylian Mbappe leading the way with two goals, and Keylor Navas saving almost everything. And efficiency was the key word after the game.

"It was efficiency of the two sides that tipped the balance. We converted all our chances and of course we were a bit lucky at the other end because Bayern had a lot of chances" said Mbappe after the match.

If you could find a weak spot in Bayern’s team, that would be defense, which is quite good actually, but last night, they didn’t react good on the counter attack. PSG players were too fast for them, and PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino knew that, and set up a game plan to exploit the weakness.

"The team played very well today. We went on the counterattack and were incredibly clinical. To score three goals against such a good team is enormously difficult. So a big congratulation to my players. Our plan worked, but we also had that necessary slice of luck. It's a very positive result, even though everything is still wide open. We have to give our all on Tuesday" said Pochettino after the game.

If you want to explain to somebody what Bayern Munich is, you can just point at Thomas Muller. Club’s youth academy product, true leader, great forward who has that great Bayern mentality, which could be seen with his spirited display last night, but also his „never say die“ attitude.

"Now our full focus is on the second leg. If we do like we did today, we'll get as many chances as we did today. If we take advantage of those chances, we'll make it through to the semi-finals. We're convinced we can progress. We missed a lot of chances today. We need to score a lot more goals, and if it ends 5-3, 6-3, nobody complains. We shot ourselves in the foot. Now we have to come from behind. If we showed the killer instinct that we often show, everything would look different. We don't need to discuss the goals we conceded. Today we left far too much to chance. " said Muller to Sky after the game.

Bayern’s striker Robert Lewandwski was clearly missing. The Pole is usually very fit, looks after his diet (his wife is a nutrition and fitness coach), and even has a sleeping coach (!), but when his team needed him the most, he got injured. And everybody knows he would score at least two more with 31 shots on goal.

"The defeat was unfortunate. PSG played with great efficiency and scored three goals from very few chances. We dominated the game, had 31 shots on goal. The way we played was impressive. Unfortunately, we were not clinical and efficient enough in front of goal. The team fought for 90 minutes on the pitch, never gave up. We want to get to the semifinals, and today's result doesn't change that" said Hansi Flick after the match.

One thing is sure: the rematch will be a thrilling affair.
