Aware of the stakes in the Mozzart Bet Cup, Nairobi United started brightly, dominating midfield play and creating dangerous attacks through Wangaya, who was their main creative force in the final third.
Posta Rangers grew into the game and almost took the lead in the 25th minute, but Brian Otieno, through on goal, was denied by a brilliant one-on-one save from goalkeeper Bernard Jairo.
The Mailmen were punished for the missed opportunity in the 32nd minute when Wangaya pounced on a loose ball and fired home after Posta failed to clear an Enock Machaka effort.
Posta came close to an equaliser in the 40th minute when, following a long throw from Faustine Ojiambo, Jackson Macharia latched onto a loose ball, but his effort was well saved by the goalkeeper.
In the second half, Posta increased their urgency, moving the ball at a higher tempo and attempting more direct play, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances by the hour mark.
Nairobi United, however, struck again, with Wangaya and Machaka combining well before the latter finished from close range.
The home side nearly added a third in the 84th minute, but Posta’s goalkeeper produced a fingertip save to deny Michael Karamor.
With the win, Nairobi United advanced to the quarter-finals, while Posta Rangers exited the competition and will now focus on improving their position in the FKF Premier League.
