Since taking charge of the Spanish giants, the Portuguese manager has already signed several players, with Dutch international Denzel Dumfries the latest to arrive

Florentino Perez has taken a different approach this summer. Or perhaps the credit also belongs to the manager. Under Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid signed four players, none older than 27 – Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Franco Mastantuono. But with Jose Mourinho returning to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, the club has shifted its focus toward proven experience.

Where Mourinho points, Perez follows, and Real have now confirmed their fourth signing of the transfer window: Denzel Dumfries.

The arrival of the Dutch international from Inter highlights a significant change in Real Madrid's transfer strategy compared to recent seasons. Before Dumfries, Los Blancos had already brought in Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate (both 27), and 31-year-old Bernardo Silva. Dumfries, who turned 30 in April, arrives after several outstanding seasons in Serie A and is expected to become a key player for Mourinho.

His greatest strength lies in his explosive runs down the right flank – one of Mourinho's trademark tactical weapons during his first spell in Madrid. Back then, Real's devastating counter-attacks, driven by wide players such as Marcelo, Angel Di María, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Callejon, helped the club capture the league title with a remarkable 100 points and 121 goals.

Real will expect Dumfries to replicate the attacking impact he delivered at Inter. Operating almost like a winger from right-back, he contributed 55 goal involvements in 208 appearances for the Nerazzurri, scoring 27 goals and providing 28 assists.

To put those numbers into perspective, Dumfries averaged a goal contribution every 243 minutes, while Arsenal full-back Jurrien Timber – statistically regarded as one of the world's most productive right-backs – recorded one every 423 minutes.

The deal had reportedly been in the works since Florentino Perez's presidential campaign. A promise made then has now become reality. Real Madrid activated Dumfries' €20 million release clause, paying the full amount to Inter.

The Dutch defender has signed a four-year contract running until June 2030 and is set to be officially unveiled at the end of July. He arrives as the successor to Dani Carvajal, whose 23-year spell at Real Madrid has come to an end.

Dumfries will compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back position after the Englishman endured a less-than-convincing debut season following his move from Liverpool.

Dumfries also brings plenty of winning experience to the Spanish capital. During his time at Inter, he won two Serie A titles, as well as three Coppa Italia trophies and three Italian Super Cups. Before moving to Italy, he impressed at PSV Eindhoven after beginning his professional career with Heerenveen.
