Walid Regragui's team managed 16 consecutive wins
Apart from the inital suprise of choosing the venue and time of the World Cup 2022 (in Qatar, in November), there were other suprises during the tournament, like Saudi Arabia‘s win over eventual champions Argentina but the biggest surprise was one African country. Morocco managed to secure the fourth place in Qatar, thus becoming the most successful African team ever in the FIFA tournament. Coach Walid Regragui became the manager in August 2022, just months before the World Cup and made a miracle. And while many believed that this was only a fluke and that the Atlas Lions are not that good, Morocco just made history again.

In the last round of qualifications for the World Cup 2026, Regragui‘s team already confirmed their participation but that doesn‘t mean that they put the foot off the pedal. The Atlas Lions defeated Congo 1-0, thus breaking Spain‘s record of 15 consecutive wins. With their 16th triumph, they became the world record holders. The ‘Red Fury‘ did it between June 2008 and June 2009 and two managers made this happen: Luis Aragones and Vincente Del Bosque. Spain managed to score 39 goals during their period and allowed only two. Morocco won their 16 games during a 16 months period. During that span, the Atlas Lions managed to score 50 goals and allowed only six. It looks like Walid Regragui and his players are more than ready for the upcoming tournament which will be played between June 11 and July 19 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
