Mombasa Elite assistant coach Phelix Ogutu has resigned, citing the need for a fresh challenge.
Ogutu tendered his resignation on Sunday evening to the club’s technical director and former AFC Leopards midfielder, Charles Okwemba.
Sources close to the camp also revealed that the CAF B coaching license holder, in a cryptic message, bid farewell to the players on Monday.
His resignation comes in the wake of the club's poor run in the second tier and the risk of losing their place in the competition.
Elite have been winless in the last six matches.
“He said goodbye in the dressing room and wished us well, though in a hidden way; we don’t understand what’s going on with him in the last two weeks,” a source told Mozzart Sport.
Ogutu joined the club at the start of the year from National Super League (NSL) outfit Gusii.
Before joining, Elite sat rock bottom on the log with 10 points from 14 rounds.
Initially, he was perceived to assume the head coach role at the club, but a sudden turn of events saw him demoted to second in command behind the team’s veteran Patrick Nyale.
His stay at the club was not an easy one, as he fought several battles, including what was reported as in-house physical altercations and frequent disagreements on matchday squad selection.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the ex-Muhoroni Youth confirmed the latest development, stating that he will be taking a short leave from football-related activities before confirming his next move.
“I tendered my resignation later on Sunday to the technical director and had earlier on informed him of my intentions, but nothing advanced at the moment; he is yet to answer my plea, and immediately he does, I will be happily rushing home,” he remarked.
“After the Nairobi United game, I made up my mind because I felt this was a match that we were supposed to win, but some internal factors made us drop all the points despite our boys giving their best; therefore, a break will do better as I explore my next targets,” he said.
Meanwhile, the former Transfoc manager has received offers from two recently promoted clubs, and will be deciding his next move before the start of June.
