For years, the stadium has languished in a dilapidated state, falling short of basic competitive standards. That is now changing after the national government, through Sport Kenya, formally handed the project to Royal Contractors Limited following a competitive tendering process in mid-May.

The upgrade fulfils President William Ruto’s pledge during his three-day state visit to Migori County earlier this year.

Although no official cost breakdown has been released, the works are reportedly valued at approximately Ksh700 million, aligning with the President’s commitment.

Construction is projected to last one year, though the contractor has expressed confidence it could be completed within six months.

Once complete, the stadium will meet CAF (Confederation of African Football) standards, featuring a 10,000-capacity seating arrangement, a running track, a modern playing surface, new changing rooms, and improved spectator facilities.

“We have officially handed over the stadium to the contractor in collaboration with the national and county governments,” Sport Kenya said in a statement.

“The stadium will have a running track, CAF-standard pitch, and changing rooms with everything required for top-tier competitions.”

Royal Contractors Limited reiterated its commitment to fast-tracking the project:

"The contract is for one year, but our target is to deliver in six months, ensuring the stadium meets CAF requirements,” the company said.

Migori County Secretary and Head of County Public Service, Oscar Olima, praised the initiative, noting the addition of extra sporting and recreational facilities.

"As a county, we are proud of this milestone. Beyond the CAF-standard pitch, running track, and dressing rooms, the stadium will feature a basketball court, gym, and modern amenities for the community,” Olima stated.

Aside from the recently completed Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani which are hosting the 2024 CHAN championship, several other sports facilities across the country are currently undergoing upgrades or fresh construction.

These include Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma, Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu, Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, and the flagship Talanta Sports City project in Nairobi, among others.

During the construction period, Migori Youth FC will be forced to relocate their home fixtures, with Awendo Green Stadium emerging as one of the likely temporary venues.
