In an absolutely breathtaking 3–2 extra-time thriller, a fearless Cape Verde side repeatedly stared down footballing royalty, twice coming from behind to push the holders to the absolute brink of disaster.

What began as an apparent masterclass in South American dominance transformed into a chaotic, heart-stopping David-and-Goliath battle, decided only when an agonising 111th-minute deflection finally allowed a sweating, relieved Argentina to escape the Hard Rock Stadium with their crown intact.

Defending champions Argentina headed into the interval with a narrow 1–0 lead over a remarkably resilient Cape Verde side in this highly anticipated World Cup Round of 32 clash in Miami.

The tournament debutants refused to be awed by the grand stage. Underdogs Cape Verde started fearlessly, with Ryan Mendes causing early anxieties in the Albiceleste backline, cutting inside from the right in the 7th minute to force an unhurried deflection into Emiliano Martínez’s grasp.

Argentina seemed to awaken from their slumber and take control of the game as Rodrigo De Paul’s ball into the box found Thiago Almada who found Messi who dragged his effort.

Minutes later, the Blue Sharks’ veteran goalkeeper, Vozinha, showcased incredible composure under pressure, juggling the ball away from an onrushing Lautaro Martínez and later producing a stop to deny a trademark Lionel Messi free-kick, albeit it was directly at Vozinha.

However, resistance against footballing royalty can only last so long. The deadlock was finally shattered in the 29th minute by none other than Messi .

Drifting undetected into space, the wizard exquisitely controlled a looping long ball from Lisandro Martinez with the outside of his boot before side footing into the net.

The sublime strike marked Messi's 20th career World Cup goal, scoring in an unprecedented eighth consecutive tournament match.

Following the breakthrough, Lionel Scaloni's men comfortably dictated the tempo, preserving energy in the sapping Miami heat.

Cape Verde grew slightly ragged toward the whistle but remained firmly in the contest, proving they belong among the elite.

Stepping onto the pitch trailing Lionel Messi's first-half opener, the Blue Sharks turned tactical resilience into outright audacity.

After surviving a couple of scares notably Molina being unable to cushion a Messi pass in behind. Cape Verde grew into the match with Deroy Duarte’s shot straight into Martinez.

The defining shockwave arrived in the 59th minute. Carving open the world champions' backline,

Deroy Duarte latched onto a precise delivery to smash home a close-range equalizer past Emiliano Martínez, netting his first-ever international goal.

Stung by the parity, Scaloni threw on Julián Álvarez and Nicolás González to restore order, but they ran into an impenetrable wall named Vozinha.

The 40-year-old Cape Verdean goalkeeper produced a legendary display, thwarting a darting Messi from point-blank range .He repeated the heroics in the 72nd minute, clawing away a signature Messi free-kick bound for the top corner.

Despite late, suffocating pressure from the Albiceleste, Cape Verde's unyielding block held firm, preserving a monumental result at the referee's full-time whistle, forcing the match into extra time.

An extraordinary first half of extra time at the Hard Rock Stadium saw the tie blown wide open, ending 2–2 after a dramatic two-goal exchange in the first 15 minutes of added time.

Argentina instantly broke the deadlock in the 92nd minute. An Alexis McAllister flick from a corner found Lisandro Martinez unmarked at the far post to smash a left footed strike into the top corner.

Yet, Cape Verde’s fairy tale refused to die. Enduring relentless pressure, the Blue Sharks engineered a historic equalizer in the 102nd minute.

Sidny Lopes Cabrall found himself at the end of a sweeping passing move , he cut inside from the left and curled a thunderbolt that left Emi Martinez with no chance, adding another twist to the match.

Another corner marked another moment of uncertainty for Cape Verde as Messi lofted it in and Cristian Romero rose highest to glance it past Vozinha, the goal later on credited as an own goal by Diney Borges.

Bubista's men will leave with their heads held high as Argentina will have to work overtime on recovery in time to face Egypt and Mo Salah.
