Mathare United midfielder Harrison Luta sent text messages to his family before he made what was not only his club debut but also his first taste of the FKF Premier League.

Luta joined the Slum Boys in the off-season transfer window from the then Division 2 side Soy United when the team was on a mission to bolster its squad in preparation for their return to top-tier football.

The former Soy United man had to wait for eight matches before making his debut. He was finally named on the starting lineup in their ninth match of the season against Posta Rangers.

Luta was elated when he learnt that he was going to start the game and says he reached out to his family members.

“I informed my mum and my sisters. I also texted someone very special who was important along this journey. I sent them a text around an hour before the game,” said Luta in an interview with the club's media.

The attacking midfielder breathed a sigh of relief after achieving his dream and shared some of the lessons that he learned.

“I want to thank God. I felt so relieved. It was a dream come true. I had really wished for it. In the end, I came to learn one thing, the main thing is to remain positive and focused whether you are in it or not. Just remain focused,” he added.

Luta was so instrumental in Mathare’s victory over Posta Rangers as he won the penalty kick that was converted by former Zoo FC striker Derrick Anami to give Mathare the lead. He revealed the reason behind his satisfactory performance.

“The way I had prepared mentally during the week, I just felt like I needed the game. From the first whistle and the first minute, I was just ready to kick it off and give my best.

I was very satisfied with the minutes I played and felt like I helped the team. From the tactical instructions that I was given, the runs in the box, I just followed instructions and remained focused throughout the entire 45 minutes,” he stated.

The start and performance were just the beginning of more to come according to Luta.

“I would just want to continue working harder, not only for myself but also for the team,” he concluded.

The soft-spoken midfielder will be looking forward to getting more minutes and an even improved performance when Mathare takes on Nairobi City Stars in their next match on Wednesday, 27 November at the Dandora Stadium from 1300 hrs.
