Mathare United head coach John Kamau has credited his side’s mental toughness following their narrow 1-0 victory over KCB FC in an FKF Premier League clash played on Friday, 26 September, at the Kasarani Annex.

The win came as a strong response after the Slum Boys’ opening-day defeat to Posta Rangers at the same venue earlier in the week.
Kamau highlighted his team’s resilience as a key factor in edging past the Bankers.
“First of all, I’m happy with the boys. We had only two days to prepare, unlike our opponents, who had seven. We relied a lot on video analysis to give the players the concept of the game, and they applied it well. That was important,” Kamau said.
“Also, the mental toughness in the last game here against Rangers, we lost focus in the second half. I’m happy because we addressed those mistakes and showed improvement,” he added.
Skipper Elli Asieche was the difference-maker, scoring the decisive goal late in the first half.
The midfielder curled a free kick past KCB FC goalkeeper Boniface Munyasia in the 43rd minute to hand Mathare their first win of the season, and his second goal of the campaign.
Kamau was full of praise for his captain, both for the goal and his tactical discipline.
"Elli Asieche’s runs give us a numerical advantage when attacking. Playing him as a false nine is proving effective, and we’re getting good returns,” the coach said.
KCB, who came into the fixture buoyed by last weekend’s 2-0 win over Tusker FC at Kasarani, failed to replicate their opening-day form.
Head coach Robert Matano admitted it was a tough outing but vowed his side would bounce back.
"It was a tough match in difficult conditions, but we have to move on quickly. Our focus now shifts to the Sharks game, and we must prepare well to bounce back,” Matano said.
The victory lifts Mathare United’s morale as they aim to rediscover the consistency that once made them league champions in 2008.
