Mathare United CEO reveals reason behind Cheche's departure

Mathare United slipped back into the relegation places after a 3-0 loss to Nairobi City Stars on Wednesday

Mathare United Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jacktone Obure says they have no issues after letting experienced defender David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng leave the club.

Ochieng left the Slum Boys and joined Kenya Police in the just concluded transfer window.

Obure said the experienced defender had given them good service in the short period of time he was at the club - when he led the club to wins against Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

“Initially, Ochieng was un-attached and was looking to travel abroad," Obure said. "At that time we had a desperate need to fill a huge gap at the back after Lennox Ogutu had been suspended.

We needed someone with his experience who could talk and encourage our players to fight and get out of the relegation zone."

The club CEO added: "Ochieng agreed to help us with an understanding that incase something came up, we would release him without any issues. That is what happened. He got a job with Kenya Police and we are delighted to let him go even with three months still on his contract.”

Obure however believes their recent signings are 'good enough to fill the gap' left by Ochieng even as he predicted that Mathare United will have a good run in the second leg.

“We have signed some good players in the past transfer window and they should easily fit into the shoes of Ochieng," he said, thanking the players and 'friends' for helping the team in its tough moments. "So far, I want to thank our players for giving their best and fighting not to be caught up in the relegation battle. Despite not having sponsors, we are grateful to our friends who have come to our aid to pay the players.

This has motivated them knowing very well that they always get something after winning a match. We continue to do our best to get a shirt sponsor for the club and we hope to succeed soon. Our target now remains to win the next three matches and forget about getting caught up in the relegation battle.”
