Massive Mason! Greenwood scores FOUR to push Marseille to the top

The former Manchester United winger breaks a Ligue 1 record with a quadruple in a 6-2 win over Le Havre

This is what history is made of! Unbelievable, unprecedented, unthinkable... Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood scored four goals on Saturday night as Olympique Marseille trashed Le Havre 6-2 to climb to the top of the Ligue 1 table!

What makes Greenwood's sensational achievement even more spectacular is that he netted three times in just nine minutes in the second half. The 24-year-old outcast opened his goalscoring account before the break from the spot to level the score at that moment. And then singlehandedly pushed Roberto De Zerbi's side to a statement win, finding the back of the net in the 67th, 72nd and 76th minutes.

According to Opta, the Englishman became the first Marseille player to net a quadruple in Ligue 1 since Jean-Pierre Papin, who did that in January 1991 during a 7-0 demolition of Olympique Lyon.

"I'm over the moon," Greenwood said post-match to broadcaster Ligue 1+. "I'd never even scored a hat-trick before, so four goals feels incredible."

Since joining Marseille, he has scored 27 Ligue 1 goals, making him the most prolific English player in the French top division since Glenn Hoddle, who reached the exact tally with AS Monaco between 1987 and 1991.

Greenwood joined Marseille from Manchester United in 2024 in a deal worth around 31,000,000 euros. It came after serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

PSG's 3-3 home draw against Strasbourg means that OM are top of the table after this Ligue 1 round.

"Today is certainly important because OM is at the top of the table," De Zerbi admitted post-match.

"It was a very important match. The first game after the break is never easy because you have to get back into the swing of things. Yesterday, I said we needed to rediscover our enthusiasm with the Velodrome and the supporters. We are at the top of the table and we want to stay there. And to do that, we must win these matches," said the Italian after a historic game.
