Marseille's risky signing: a forward without a double digit season

Joaquin Correa has moved from Inter to the French league

Inter was in a hurry to find a replacement for Romelu Lukaku in August 2021. Nerazurri earned 113,000,000 euros from Belgian’s transfer to Chelsea, who, along with Lautaro Martínez brought them the championship title that year. Antonio Conte walked away, in came Simone Inzaghi from Lazio, and Inter believed him that Joaquin Correa was the right solution. Two weeks after Big Rom left Giuseppe Meazza, Joaquin Correa arrived at Italy's biggest stadium, but the 33 million forward turned out to be a flop. The Nerazzurri paid Lazio 6,000,000 euros just for the loan, and last summer, there was a mandatory buyout at a price of 27,300,000 euros. At the time, Inter management probably viewed Correa as a player who knew the opportunities in Serie A well and for whom a period of adaptation to the league would not be necessary. It turned out that he had to be a replacement for the attacking duo of Lautaro Martinez - Edin Dzeko.

And after only ten goals in 77 games, Inter decided to sell him and return at least part of the invested money - about a third. Olympique de Marseille made the transfer of the Argentine official official. The financial formula says 2,000,000 euros for the loan and another 10,000,000 if the French giant decides to buy him. Well, that's already money worth gambling with, and Correa is certainly a risky bet since this is a guy who has never played a season with double-digit league goals in his career.

In Estudiantes, from which he left for Europe and signed for Sampdoria (8,400,000 euros), he never scored more than two goals in a season, while in the ranks of Sampdoria, he was the author of three league goals in the competitive 2015/16. When Sevilla bought him for 18,200,000 euros in 2016, he didn't shine either - four league goals in the first season, two league goals in the second, but even after such numbers (admittedly, he scored goals in the Copa del Rey), the Andalusians managed to sell him to Lazio for 17,850,000 euros. In Rome, he was a bit better - 30 goals in 117 games, 22 of which in Serie A. And then Inter bought him for 33,300,000 euros! So, 64 goals in 361 games. Not good even for a player who is not a classical striker but is a forward. And now Marseille, already in trouble with their fans for being eliminated from the Champions League, are buying this player.
