The French club is in an extremely difficult situation, and Xabi Alonso was unwilling to step into such an environment

Xabi Alonso has reportedly turned down an offer from Olympique de Marseille, declining the chance to take over as the club’s next head coach.

The French giants are in turmoil following the departures of Roberto De Zerbi and sporting director Medhi Benatia, prompting owner Frank McCourt to make a bold attempt to bring Alonso in as a stabilising figure. But the former Real Madrid boss was unconvinced by what was on the table.

Concerns over the club’s leadership structure and long-term vision played a key role in his decision. Marseille are still searching for a new president to replace Pablo Longoria, and the lack of a clear sporting project has raised red flags for potential candidates.

Tensions around the club have also been escalating. A heavy 5–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain and an early Champions League exit have sparked unrest among supporters, who recently voiced their frustration with protest banners at the Velodrome.

Given the volatile environment, Alonso felt the job carried too much risk. The Spaniard remains unemployed since leaving Real Madrid in January, but his stock remains high after winning 24 of his 34 games in charge, despite reported clashes with senior players in the dressing room.

He continues to attract interest from elite clubs, with Liverpool and Manchester City both said to be tracking his situation ahead of the summer.

With Alonso no longer an option, Marseille are now pushing ahead with plans to appoint Habib Beye, who recently parted ways with Rennes and is poised for a swift return to Ligue 1.
