Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans has emerged as United's priority target after the club abandoned its pursuit of Atalanta's Ederson, with negotiations now at an advanced stage

Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans in a surprise move that has quickly gathered momentum, with the Belgium international now emerging as the club's leading midfield target.

Although Tielemans is under contract until 2028, United believe they have a genuine opportunity to complete the deal.

According to The Athletic, discussions between the clubs and the player's representatives are ongoing, while the 29-year-old is understood to favour a move to Old Trafford despite attracting interest from elsewhere.

Villa are reluctant to lose one of their key performers, but Tielemans' contract reportedly contains a release clause worth around £35 million, leaving the Midlands club with limited room to block the transfer if it is activated.

United's interest intensified after shelving their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

The Premier League giants had reached an agreement with the Italian club over a deal worth €40.5 million plus a further €4.5 million in potential add-ons, while personal terms had also been settled with the Brazilian.

However, the transfer stalled after Ederson received a late call-up to Brazil's FIFA World Cup squad, delaying the completion of his medical. United continued monitoring alternative options during that period, allowing them to move swiftly for Tielemans once doubts emerged over the deal.

The Red Devils could still revisit Ederson later in the transfer window, although it remains uncertain whether Atalanta or the player would be willing to reopen negotiations.

Tielemans has been one of Aston Villa's standout performers since joining on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023. Last season he played a pivotal role as Unai Emery's side secured UEFA Champions League qualification and lifted the Europa League trophy, contributing two goals and seven assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

His importance to Villa had prompted Emery to view him as a cornerstone of his midfield alongside Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana. But Onana's serious ACL injury sustained during Belgium's World Cup victory over the United States has disrupted those plans.

Tielemans also impressed at the World Cup, captaining Belgium to the quarter-finals and scoring twice in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Senegal in the round of 32. He missed Belgium's defeat to Spain after suffering an injury during the pre-match warm-up.

Strengthening midfield has become one of United's top priorities following Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's knee ligament injury at the World Cup.

The club have already signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea but continue to search for further reinforcements after missing out on Elliot Anderson, who joined Manchester City, and Mateus Fernandes, who completed a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
