Sverre Nypan, 18, is on the verge of joining Pep Guardiola's side. However, there's a catch...

Manchester City is close to agreeing to sign talented Norwegian midfielder Sverre Nypan, English media report on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old Rosenborg wunderkind, who's been labelled as the next Martin Odegaard, is finalising personal terms with the Premier League giants. The fee is expected to be a record for a player from the Norwegian league.

However, according to sources, after signing a long-term contract with Manchester City, Nypan will go on a season-long loan elsewhere to continue his development.

During the January transfer window, he was wanted by several European teams, including Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Girona.

The Gunners even hosted Nypan but could not persuade the teenager, and he chose to stay at Rosenborg. The Villans went to Norway to present their vision for the player, but it was Manchester City who finally convinced Nypan and his family to move to the Etihad Stadium.

The teenager has already made 70 senior games for Rosenborg and is a Norway Under-21 international.

As per The Athletic, direct comparisons with Odegaard are "tempting and not unreasonable", but Nypan is a more all-round midfielder.

"He can pass, carry, create and score goals, too, but tends to occupy more areas of the pitch. Nypan is more of a No 8, less of a No 10, and plays with fewer flourishes", explain they.
