The slum boys are chasing promotion after they were relegated alongside Vihiga Bullets last season.

Mathare United assistant coach Jeff Maina has expressed satisfaction with the side’s performance in round two of the National Super League (NSL) against Mulembe United.

The Slum Boys beat Mulembe 2-1 at the Police Pavillion grounds in South C last Sunday to register their first win of the season having kicked off the campaign with a barren draw away to Migori Youth.

Goals from Mark Khadohi and Meshack Otieno won the game for Mathare with Kendrick Onzere finding the consolation for Mulembe who are still winless.

Mulembe who operated as Vihiga United in the previous seasons kicked off the current one with a 2-1 loss to the on-form Kajiado FC.

Maina said last weekend's win was a good starting point to the team that is bidding to regain promotion after kissing the grass last season.

"The boys played well and managed to get maximum points. We worked for it in training and I am glad they delivered the first win," said the former Naivas coach.

The tactician urged the team to build on the win and fight to achieve the set targets.

He termed the hard-fought victory ‘a source of motivation and confidence’ to the team that is laced with a number of experienced players.

"If we will build on the win then I believe we will have a good season. Every game comes with different motivation so is every win," he added.

Mathare were relegated alongside Vihiga Bullets who finished at the bottom in the top-flight last season.

Bullets are yet to win a game this season as the team lost 5-1 to Gusii in the league opener before playing Dimba Patriots to a 1-1 draw last weekend.
