Liverpool complete the underwhelming signing of Wataru Endo
Last season, Jurgen Klopp signed Arthur Melo from Juventus in a desperate attempt to bolster his midfield options. This year, he's done something similar.
After watching Chelsea secure the signings of midfielders Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Romeo Lavia from Southampton, Klopp needed someone as an alternative. And he found it in his homeland in the shape of Japanese international Wataru Endo. The arrival of the Asian footballer comes after his three-season stint in the Bundesliga with VfB Stuttgart. Liverpool seized the opportunity to acquire the midfielder by paying around $18 million to bring him to Anfield.

Endo has openly expressed that signing with Liverpool is a "dream come true" for him. The 30-year-old defensive midfielder has officially sealed a four-year contract with the Reds.
"I'm very happy right now and excited to join a big club in Liverpool. It feels amazing, and this is my dream. It's always been a dream to play in the Premier League and with one of the biggest clubs in the world. It's a dream come true for me. It's going to be the first time for me that I play at Anfield. I can't wait to play at Anfield in front of Liverpool fans."
Endo becomes the third acquisition for Liverpool in this transfer window, following the earlier signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szboszlai.
Although Endo's arrival resembles that of Melo, who proved utterly useless, the Japanese can prove to be a shrewd addition to the squad.
"I play as a No 6, and I'm like a bit more [of a] defensive player. I think I can help this club defensively. I'll have a good organisation in the middle. I think that's my job."
After the departures of captain Jordan Henderson and vice-captain James Milner, the subject of leadership has taken centre stage for everyone who follows Liverpool. Endo enters the scene equipped with a strong leadership background. He previously captained Stuttgart and currently holds the captain's armband for the Japanese national team.
Characterised by his modesty and calmness, he is a quiet yet formidable leader. Although he may not be very vocal, his words carry significant weight for his teammates. Endo speaks quite good English, which will contribute to instilling authority within the midfield. He's poised to play a vital role in rejuvenating the Reds' midfield.
Endo made 50 international appearances for his homeland. Additionally, he has consistently anchored Stuttgart's midfield in the Bundesliga for the past three years, solidifying his role as a key fixture in the heart of their team. Now Klopp expects him to do the same in England.
"Wataru is an experienced player, captain of Stuttgart, captain of Japan, speaks good English, nice fella, family man, machine on the pitch, good footballer on top of that, sensational attitude. So, I'm really happy. He's a good footballer, very experienced and loves to work extremely hard."
