Liverpool in fear: Key player could follow in Trent's footsteps

Modus operandi is the same: rejecting the proposed extension terms and then leaving the club either for free or for a significantly small amount

One of the crucial parts of Liverpool's outstanding title-winning campaign was their sturdy defensive line, as Arne Slot's crew had the second-best defence after Arsenal, conceding only 41 goals in the Premier League. Still, many Reds' fans fear the team won't be able to maintain that level in the following season.

One essential member of that defence has already left, as Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid. However, one of his ex-teammates from Anfield and his fellow defender could follow in his footsteps. And in the most literal way.

Namely, unlike Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, TAA rejected every Liverpool's extension proposal and, in the end, moved to Santiago Bernabeu for a symbolic sum of €10 million. History may be repeating, as Ibrahima Konate reportedly refused to extend his deal with the Reds, dissatisfied with the proposed conditions.

The Frenchman was unhappy with the offered basic wage, as the club included numerous bonuses at the expense of his rudimentary salary. Given that his contract expires next June, everyone at Anfield is afraid they could lose the player and earn nothing.

In addition, Slot's solid defence would suffer a huge blow, as Konate and Van Dijk's understudy in the centre-back position, Jarrell Quansah, is on the verge of joining Bayer Leverkusen, leaving Joe Gomez as the only alternative.

Hence, if they do not manage to solve Konate's situation soon, the Reds would have to start searching for a new defensive solution, which is never easy to find.
