In his only second season in professional football, Jamie Carragher's son is one goal away from equaling his father's career goal tally, although the Liverpool legend played almost 700 more games

If the saying Like father, like son is applicable in numerous cases, it's completely opposite when it comes to the Carragher family.

The father, Jamie, is a Liverpool legend and the club's second all-time leading appearance maker, with 737 games. He made his debut with the Reds as a 19-year-old in 1997 and never left Anfield. He played 38 matches for the England national team and participated in two FIFA World Cups (2006 and 2010).

However, his son James didn't really ride on his dad's coattails. He spent six years at Liverpool's youth categories, but then moved to Wigan Athletic. After joining the club's senior squad in 2021, he was sent on loan to the fifth-tier side Oldham Athletic and the Scottish Inverness before making his debut with the League One side in August 2024.

At the same time, James had no chance to represent the Three Lions, so he opted for Malta, for which he played four matches.

However, in one aspect, the son outshines the father - he is a better scorer.

Even though both Jamie and James have been centre-backs, the Liverpool legend netted only four times in his entire 17-year-long career, excluding own goals, as he is joint-second in the all-time own goals list of the Premier League.

As for the son, he is currently in his second season of professional football, having made only 54 career appearances, and has already scored three goals.

Last weekend, James found the net in Wigan's FA Cup win over Barrow (3-2), and came just one goal away from equaling his father's tally, although Jamie played almost 700 more games!

Hence, he may not be as successful a defender as the dad, but the 23-year-old Carragher definitely knows his way around a rival's goal.
