Lifeline at Anfield: Lousy Liverpool bring Spurs back to life

Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 15.03.26. | 21:42

After six straight defeats and a humiliation against Atletico Madrid, Tottenham salvaged a 1-1 draw against the Reds thanks to Richarlison’s last-minute leveller

It’s nice to be nice. It’s humane to offer a hand to someone who has fallen. After today’s clash in Liverpool, Arne Slot’s team can be considered very compassionate, though their fans won’t like it at all.

Tottenham arrived at Anfield as a completely ruined crew - both mentally and on the pitch - whose six-defeat run wasn’t close to an end. On top of everything, the embarrassment they experienced in Madrid was still on their minds.

Still, instead of piling up on the rivals' misery and recording a vital win in the Champions League race, Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 18th minute through the magnificent Dominik Szoboszlai, and then stopped playing, leaving Alisson to save them.

The Brazilian was an insurmountable obstacle for the Spurs until the 90th minute, when Richarlison (from his fifth attempt) put on a hero cape and salvaged a vital draw for the London club, which is still on the verge of the relegation zone, but the atmosphere on the team will undoubtedly be much different after this heroic performance.

Not only that they weren't humiliated like five days ago, when Atletico destroyed them 5-2 in the UCL, but Spurs were the first to threaten in the 12th minute through the 19-year-old Brazilian Souza, whose long-distance strike was barely tipped over the bar by his compatriot Alisson.

Nevertheless, just six minutes later, Liverpool broke the deadlock. Dominik Szoboszlai once again showed he was one of the best free-kick takers in the world at the moment, scoring a banger, his fifth free-kick goal of the season.

The impression was that Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario could have reacted better, though this time the London side's boss Igor Tudor did not sub off his custodian because of a mistake or two, as he did in the case of Antonin Kinsky in the UCL duel with Atleti.

The Reds could have completely sealed the deal before the break, as Cody Gakpo hit the post in the 36th minute, and that fortunate turn of events seemed to have awakened the visitors, who threatened dangerously through Richarlison in the dying minutes of the first period, but his two headers didn't hit the mark. One went wide of the post, and the other was denied by Alisson.

The Brazilian opened the second half with another excellent opportunity, this time one-on-one with the Reds' goalie, who made a terrific point-blank save.

After a rather peaceful quarter of an hour, the battle heated up in the final 20 minutes. Mohamed Salah, who came off the bench, wasted a fantastic chance to definitely kill Tottenham in the 73rd minute, leaving their hope of avoiding a defeat alive.

And when they were given a chance to survive, the visitors grabbed it with their both hands in the final minute, when Richarlison - the absolute hero of Spurs' comeback - seized the opportunity handed by a poor reaction of the Reds' defence and Randal Kolo Muani's pass, netting the vital leveller, which could turn the tables for the North London club, but also completely ruin Liverpool's Champions League aspirations.
