The Hammers strike Man City and push Arsenal toward the title

Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 15.03.26. | 07:09

West Ham United did a big favor for Arsenal FC by drawing 1–1 with Manchester City — a point that was also important for them in the fight to avoid relegation

What a day for Manchester City and Arsenal — in one word, a rollercoaster. At one point, Mikel Arteta’s side seemed on the verge of dropping points and allowing City to close the gap in the table. However, the opposite happened: the Gunners managed to secure a late victory, while West Ham United held Pep Guardiola.

From the opening minutes, Manchester City dominated possession. In the 7th minute, the match resembled a training rondo involving almost the entire City lineup, as the visitors patiently circulated the ball while searching for an opening in West Ham’s defense.

The next notable chance came in the 22nd minute when Omar Marmoush stepped up to take a free-kick from around 25 yards out. However, his attempt failed to trouble the goalkeeper as the ball flew wide of the target.

City eventually took the lead in the 31st minute thanks to a moment of brilliance from Bernardo Silva. Receiving the ball on the left flank in what looked like a crossing position, the Portuguese midfielder instead lifted a stunning effort toward goal, catching Mads Hermansen off guard and lobbing him to give Manchester City the advantage.

West Ham responded quickly. Just four minutes later, in the 35th minute, the hosts found their equalizer. Jarrod Bowen delivered a dangerous inswinging corner into the penalty area, where Konstantinos Mavropanos rose highest and powered a header into the back of the net.

Manchester City nearly regained the lead just before halftime in the 45th minute. Wan-Bissaka was caught in possession, allowing Haaland to receive the ball and set up Antoine Semenyo for a shot. However, Semenyo’s effort drifted wide, leaving the score level at the break.

City threatened early after the restart in the 48th minute. Antoine Semenyo led a quick attack before finding Bernardo Silva, who laid the ball off for Marmoush. The forward turned well inside the box but dragged his shot wide of the target.

West Ham responded in the 54th minute when Soucek delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area. Castellanos arrived unmarked but completely missed the ball with his header, allowing Matheus Nunes to clear the danger.

Manchester City went close again in the 61st minute. Erling Haaland unleashed a strong effort that looked destined for the net, but Hermansen produced a superb fingertip save to keep the score level.

Another big opportunity came in the 67th minute when Rodri provided a good assist for Nunes, who managed to get a shot away from a promising position, but the West Ham goalkeeper reacted well to deny him.

City continued to push forward. In the 78th minute, following a corner, Rayan Cherki managed to get a shot through a crowded penalty area, but his attempt went straight into the goalkeeper’s hands.

The visitors came agonizingly close again in the 83rd minute when a wide free-kick from Tijjani Reijnders crashed against the crossbar, with City once more denied by fine margins.

In the closing stages, Jeremy Doku beat Wan-Bissaka and whipped a dangerous cross into the box in the 88th minute. The ball was heading toward Haaland, but Disasi reacted just in time to clear it away.
