Nyakwaka has scored seven goals in eight matches and aims to hit more than twenty before the season ends
The leading National Super League scorer Philemon Nyakwaka has revealed that the counsel from former Kenyan international Bonface Ambani has been propelling him to score goals consistently in the second tier.
Nyakwaka who plies trade with Mara Sugar leads the scorer’s chart in the Super League courtesy of seven strikes in eight rounds with Moustapha Dulmant of Rainbow coming second with four goals.
Reuben Mita, a teammate to Nyakwaka at Mara has four goals so does the duo of Michael Karamor and Brian Lusamukha of Kisumu All Stars and Nairobi United respectively.
Nyakwaka who managed fourteen league goals last season with the sugar men disclosed that Ambani’s advice was a source of inspiration in his career.
A former striker during his active years, Ambani is closely tied to Mara by virtue of being the club’s technical director.
“One thing I credit him is he never tires of advising upcoming players. He has keeps on reminding me that I have the potential to become the player I dream of. His records during his days in the Kenyan league also motivate me to work harder,” conceded Nyakwaka.
Besides tapping experience and advice from Ambani, Nyakwaka admitted to being a fan of Harambee Stars skipper Michael Olunga who is attached to Qatari side Al Duhail.
“He is a forward I grew up watching. I admire his hard work and discipline. He is for sure a source of hope for many budding footballers,” said the former Emuhaya FC player.
With Mara being fronted as one of the candidates for automatic promotion, Nyakwaka, a Diploma in Civil Engineering holder pledged to help deliver by scoring at least 26 goals in the season.
Mara came short of achieving promotion last season after fading in the second leg but appear strong enough to punch one of the two available automatic promotion tickets.
The club hired Vincent Nyaberi last week to steer the ship after Francis Xavier left for an assistant coaching job at Sofapaka.
Nyaberi, a CAF B coaching license holder inspired Murang’a Seal to promotion last season.
“The ultimate goal of the season is getting the team promoted. We only need to be consistent throughout so as to sail through,” said the former Dandora Love striker.
