Last time Newcastle defeated City at Etihad, Pep was a Bayern Munich coach

Manchester City and Newcastle meet again (and it won't be the last time this season) on Saturday night, in one of the most one-sided games in prospect ever

Traditions are an important part of every football rivalry, but sometimes they tell the story of one team's dominance. Like in the case of Manchester City and their today's Premier League rival, Newcastle United.

The last time the Magpies defeated the Cityzens at the Etihad was 29 October 2014 - almost 12 years ago! The visitors celebrated a deserved 2-0 League Cup win thanks to Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko. There are two stunning facts about that particular game and time...

First and foremost, Man City's current coach, Pep Guardiola, who's been in charge of the team for the last ten years, was at the helm of Bayern Munich at the time. Moreover, that 2-0 victory over the cup holders ended an 11-game winless run for Newcastle at the Etihad at that moment.

What followed has been another dreadful series of disappointing results for the Geordies, who lost the next seven encounters against the same opponents across all competitions, including the recent League Cup 3-1 loss.

Eddie Howe's men also lost to the same rival at St. James' Park in the reverse leg, but they did celebrate a win in the first EPL clash between the two in November 2025 (2-1).

And as a genuine Groundhog Day, Manchester City and Newcastle are about to face each other again in the FA Cup quarter-finals, too. This means they'll face each other an incredible five times this season!

Can the Magpies record at least two victories? Highly improbable, despite their latest spectacular Champions League outing, when they destroyed Qarabag 6-1 in the knockout phase.

On the other hand, Pep Guardiola was quite unimpressed with his team's 2-0 FA Cup triumph over fourth-tier side Salford. Therefore, it's expected to see some changes in the starting XI.

Phil Foden and Tijjani Reijnders could be dropped out because neither performed well against League Two opposition.

They could be replaced with Nico O'Reilly and Bernardo Silva, while Rayan Ait-Nouri should hold the left-back position.

Rayan Cherki did score at St. James' Park last month, but could be benched this time in favour of Omar Marmoush, who'll be accompanied by Antoine Semenyo on the other flank. Finally, Erling Haaland rested against Salford and could be Howe's nightmare over and over again.
