Ambetsa revealed that his move was largely influenced by his career ambitions outside rugby.
Former Kabras RFC speedster Lameck Ambetsa has opened up on his decision to join Nondescripts RFC, marking the end of a successful three-year spell with the Sugarmen.
Ambetsa made his debut for Nondies during the Impala Floodlights quarterfinals, where they edged out a stubborn Strathmore Leos side 27–22 on Saturday, 25 October, to book a place in the semifinals.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Ambetsa revealed that his move was largely influenced by his career ambitions outside rugby.
“It was mainly job-related. I wanted to explore my career more, and after the injury, it really opened my eyes to start thinking about an exit plan,” he said.
The winger, a civil and structural engineering graduate from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, suffered a tibia hairline fracture while representing Kenya at the 2024 Olympic Games. He said the rehabilitation period became a turning point, allowing him to reassess his long-term goals beyond rugby.
“Nairobi offers more growth opportunities compared to Kakamega, with more companies around. I studied civil and structural engineering, and that’s what I’m pursuing now,” he added.
Ambetsa joined Kabras in December 2022 from MMUST RFC and went on to enjoy immense success, winning three consecutive Kenya Cup titles (2022/23, 2023/24, and 2024/25) and two Enterprise Cups (2022/23 and 2023/24).
Despite adjusting to a new setup at Nondies, the speedster said the transition has been smooth, thanks to his previous experience in Nairobi during national team camps.
“I’ve been in Nairobi before during the Kenya Sevens camps, so settling in hasn’t been hard. It was easy to adapt. In terms of the game, there’s not much difference. The main thing is that at Kabras, we used to train several times a day, while here at Nondies, most of the players are working, so the schedule has to accommodate that,” he explained.
The winger is now focused on helping Nondies make an even deeper run in this year’s Floodies tournament.
“Last time we reached the semis, but this time we are determined to go even further,” he stated.
Nondies head coach Moses Wanyaga lauded Ambetsa’s early impact at the club, noting that his addition has brought a new dynamic to the team’s attacking play.
“I love him on the wing. At training, he has looked fantastic. He’s fit right into our system, and I think our structure will start to show more of Lameck in a different space. We just need to get that chemistry and gelling going. There will be more to see of him in the next three weeks,” Wanyaga said.
