Liverpool's coach blames his team poor finishing for the defeat in the Merseyside Derby against Everton (2-0)
Liverpool's coach Jurgen Klopp was saddened for his team after a 2-0 home defeat against the city rivals Everton in the Merseyside Derby played at Anfield. In his post-match interview, the German tactician pointed out that poor finishing was to blame for the first Toffees' victory against the Reds after 2010, and the first at Anfield since 1999.
"Most importantly, we have to admit that they scored twice, we didn't score, and that's the result," stressed Klopp and added:
"Besides those goals, everyone saw that we did create enough chances to win the game despite conceding two. But we didn't. This means we were not clinical enough in the last moments; the creating was great, even outstanding if you want to know. Against this deep-block, it really is difficult for sure. We had to defend better because their first goal gave a direction to the game. We were, as I said, really good at creating chances, but not in finishing. It's not easy to give a clear-cut answer after this kind of game."
Asked about the drop-off in both points and the quality of Liverpool's display in the last couple of months, Klopp said that this particular tie was a good example of Liverpool's flaws that became obvious during the last few rounds.
"Being dominant, being in charge of the game, don't finish it off and then the opponent strike. Today they needed that one goal; the penalty was not that important. We make one mistake, they score. They make ten mistakes; we don't score. That's the situation at the moment. We have to change that. I don't like to mention those good things so much, but it is a sign that we can change. That's what we will do; just keep ongoing.
"A lot of strange things happen, like Jordan Henderson getting injured today. Honestly, it's a tough one to take. And it doesn't look it's a little one, unfortunately as well. But we will go through this and, in the end, succeed. We will see when that will happen," concluded Klopp.
