The Toffees conquer Anfield for the first time in the 21st century!

Everton surpassed Liverpool (0-2), which is their maiden away victory in the Merseyside Derby after September 1999

It was still the 20th century, Jurgen Klopp was a decent defender of Mainz 05, Carlo Ancelotti was in charge of that mighty Juventus led by Zinedine Zidane, YouTube and Twitter were not even invented, Arsenal's Nwankwo Kanu was the African footballer of the year...

That's what the world looked like the last time Everton won the Merseyside Derby at Anfield before tonight. It was September 1999 and the Toffees had to wait for a ridiculous 21 years to concur Liverpool's fortress once again! Thanks to an early goal from the Brazilian striker Richarlison and Sigurdsson's penalty they celebrated their first triumph (0-2) against the city rivals after 11 years (2-0 win, October 2010 at Goodison Park). Unplayable James Rodriguez smoothly passed the ball between the two Reds' defenders, Richarlison was fast to engage and his powerful shot gave visitors a shocking lead.

Klopp's army soon bounced back but Alexander-Arnold and Henderson's wonderful missiles were denied by marvellous Pickford. the English national team custodian. Liverpool's forward trio - Salah, Mane, Firmino - were pretty much effortless in the first half. At the same time, the German tactician - already in trouble for his long-time-no-see defenders such as Van Dijk and Matip - got himself a new headache thanks to Henderson's injury in the first half.

After the half-time break, the home team were more aggressive and determined to extend Everton's winless streak against them, though it seemed that even luck is not on their side. Sane's header, Salah's tap-in and James' shot did have the potential to tie the game, but there was always something missing for the Reds. Stunned Klopp stood on the sidelines with his mouth opened, refusing to believe his boys were on the verge of defeat.

Ten minutes before the final whistle, Everton struck - Richarlison took the ball at the centre, gave it to Calvert-Lewin, his shot was saved by Alisson, but Alexander-Arnold's subsequent tackle resulted in a penalty. Sigurdsson was calm and accurate from the spot for a decisive 2-0 which gets them closer to the UCL spot. And the history of the Merseyside Derby has been rewritten.
