Kenya's AFCON 2027 Stadium Talanta Sports City takes shape [VIDEO]

The Talanta Sports City that is earmarked to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is taking shape, 10 months after its construction began.

The stadium is part of the four stadia alongside Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Center Kasarani set to host the 2027 AFCON with the latter two also earmarked for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) that kicks off on Saturday 1 February.

The groundbreaking for the 60,000 seater stadium took place on 1 March 2024 and was presided over by President William Ruto with the project initially expected to be completed by December 2025 but with an allowance of March 2026.

In the video, works on the terraces which are the bulk of the construction works are advanced as the stands which will be a three-tier taking shape with major structural works in the first two tiers done and works ongoing in the top tier.

Works at the playing surface are also ongoing according to the video with the construction and installation of the drainage system ongoing as of 21 December 2024.

The stadium which will not have a running track will be the first of its kind in the East and Central African region and a benchmark in the region according to former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba.

Some of the features in the stadium will include a modern VVIP area, a modern media centre, executive changing rooms for players, match officials, ball boys, security as well as a modern VAR room.

The playing surface will measure 105 meters by 68 meters as recommended by FIFA as well as a 3,000-capacity parking area among others.

The facility is constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation with supervision from the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.

Talanta Sports City is the first brand new international standard constructed by the Government of Kenya since the construction of Nyayo National Stadium and Kasarani Stadium in 1983 and 1987 respectively by former President Daniel Moi.
