The 30-year-old veterinary doctor, a lifelong Chelsea fan, described the moment as surreal and long-awaited.
“Finally, I am living my dream. I wanted to be at Stamford Bridge, and I am here. As we always say, why not! I hope today we will win,” Munyua said ahead of the game, his excitement palpable.
Earlier in the week, Munyua had confidently predicted a Chelsea victory and looked forward to mingling with other fans at Stamford Bridge, marking his first-ever visit outside Africa.
“I’ve obviously never seen Chelsea live because I’ve never been out of Africa before. At Stamford Bridge, I think it will be an easy game for us,” he had said.
However, his hopes of witnessing a win were dashed as Enzo Maresca’s men fell 2-1 to Aston Villa, with Ollie Watkins scoring a brace in the 63rd and 84th minutes. Joao Pedro had initially given Chelsea the lead in the 37th minute.
For Munyua, the visit was the latest chapter in a remarkable fairytale. He had already made history as the first Kenyan to win a match at the PDC World Darts Championship, defeating 18th-ranked Mike De Decker in the first round.
Remarkably, he came from two sets down to clinch a 3-2 victory in a pulsating encounter at Alexandra Palace in London. His quest for further glory ended in the second round, where he lost in straight sets to Kevin Doets on Monday evening.
Trending worldwide, Munyua’s rise has been meteoric. Just three years ago, he was introduced to darts by a friend over a beer. Today, he is the first Kenyan to compete and win on the sport’s biggest stage.
His breakthrough victory was nothing short of dramatic: overturning a 2-0 deficit in sets, keeping his composure despite a wasp landing on his eye mid-match, and completing a historic comeback that captured the imagination of darts fans everywhere.
