Ogai, who for a second successive game took over coaching duties in Matano’s absence, said The Bankers’ 1-0 win was meant to bring back a smile on their manager’s face, even as he gets through a trying moment in his life.

Having endured a run of three games without victory, KCB finally secured their first win of the new year, courtesy of a fine finish from new signing Francis Kahata in the first half.

Speaking after the game, Ogai explained its significance saying: “This win was for our coach Robert Matano. We thought we were going to comfort him in our last match against Nairobi United, but it did not go our way.

Now that we have found it, this win is for him. It has not been easy for him. When one loses a close person, there is a feeling of sadness, but we hope that this win will give him some joy.”

Matano is in his first season at KCB, and will on Thursday, 22 January host well-wishers at a family fundraiser at United Kenya Club (Nairobi) from 5:00pm.

Comparing the side’s latest match to the 2-0 loss to Nairobi United on 15 January, Ogai was pleased with the conduct of his players, especially defensively.

“This was a tougher game to that of Nairobi United given the players we had missing through injury, and the shake form we had coming in,” Ogai said.

“Defensively we did a good job - Dennis Maruti and Humphrey Mieno were tracking back when we lost possession, and we registered a much-needed clean sheet to get our first win of 2026, and rebuild our confidence ahead of the next game.”

The win took KCB sixth on the FKF Premier League log with 25 points, eight behind joint-leaders AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.

Up next for them is a clash against Tusker on Sunday, 25 January at Kasarani Annex.
