Ingwe went into the midweek encounter determined to make amends after a disappointing start to the year, having suffered a shock defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz in the Ingo Derby.

The reaction was convincing, as an own goal from Duncan Omalla and a well-taken strike by Kelly Madada secured a 2-0 win that lifted Leopards back to the top of the standings.

Reflecting on the result, the former Dandora Love defender said the narrow margins at the summit made the victory non-negotiable.

“It was very important for us to win this game because the race at the top is extremely tight. We needed to restore our position and ensure we stay in control.

The team gave everything on the pitch, and the result shows the hunger we have. Going forward, we want to build on this performance, remain consistent, and push to extend our winning run,” Odhiambo said.

The win marked Leopards’ first victory of the year and came just days after Fred Ambani’s side missed an opportunity to open up a gap at the top following their loss to Homeboyz.

That defeat had seen Ingwe surrender pole position to their conquerors, albeit on goal difference.

Leopards’ latest success also saw them dislodge Gor Mahia, who had briefly climbed to the summit on Tuesday after an emphatic victory over Kariobangi Sharks.

The back-and-forth at the top continues to show the intensity of the title chase.

Earlier, Ingwe had ended 2025 on a high after edging Bidco United to claim the top spot, but their stay at the summit lasted just one matchday before Homeboyz leapfrogged them.

Gor Mahia’s midweek win then saw them surge past three teams above them, only for Leopards to respond and reclaim top position.

With several contenders separated by fine margins, the league race remains wide open, and the assistant captains' comments reflect a squad fully aware that consistency, rather than moments, will define who stays on top in the weeks ahead.
