For KCB, the point is a positive step as they continue their push to steady their campaign, having come off a morale-boosting win over Mara Sugar

Kakamega Homeboyz squandered a golden opportunity to return to the summit of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League after being held to a frustrating 1–1 draw by KCB FC at Bukhungu Stadium.

Homeboyz, who needed a win to reclaim top spot and open a two-point gap, got the perfect start but failed to build on their early momentum, allowing the Bankers to fight back after the interval.

With the summit within reach, Homeboyz stormed into the match with hunger and intent, needing only three minutes to break the deadlock.

Former Gor Mahia attacker Gedeon Bendeka timed his run to perfection, racing into the KCB penalty area to expertly connect with a pinpoint delivery from Peter Thiong’o, sending the home supporters into early celebration.

The Congolese forward nearly doubled the lead six minutes later when he latched onto a John Omondi delivery, but KCB defender Nashon Alembi reacted swiftly to cut out the danger with a decisive interception.

Homeboyz stayed on the front foot and almost struck again in the 13th minute.

Midfielder Rodgers Ouma, well picked out by an Estone Omengo set-piece, forced veteran midfielder Humphrey Mieno to intervene with an important block.

Ouma came even closer moments later. Released on the right flank by a quick Omengo restart, Omondi squared the ball perfectly, only for Ouma to misdirect his effort with goalkeeper Boniface Munyasa already beaten, a glorious chance that went begging.

The missed opportunities nearly proved costly. In the 27th minute, KCB forward Francis Kahiro found space after being teed up by Boniface Omondi, but Homeboyz defender Silas Abung’ana threw himself into the ball’s path to make a brilliant block.

Homeboyz responded with another chance six minutes later, this time through Thiong’o, whose towering header from Omengo’s precise cross was denied on the near post by the ever-alert Mieno.

Five minutes before the break, Kahiro threatened again for the visitors, but goalkeeper Simon Masaka produced a firm catch to preserve Homeboyz’s slender advantage heading into halftime.

The second half saw a rejuvenated KCB regain control of the game.

Their pressure paid off just eight minutes after the restart when former Gor Mahia winger Boniface Omondi pounced on a poorly cleared ball by the Homeboyz backline to slot past Masaka, restoring parity.

Sensing momentum, the Bankers pressed further. Young midfielder Jack Ong’anya turned his marker brilliantly before being denied by another vital block from Abung’ana.

In the 67th minute, KCB almost completed the turnaround when Amatton Samunya rose highest to meet Mieno’s corner, only for Ouma to clear off the line with a crucial intervention.

Homeboyz nearly reclaimed the lead in the 75th minute through a double chance.

First, Glen Masava unleashed a powerful low drive from a Josephat Lopaga setup, but Alembi produced a smart block.

The rebound fell kindly to Hillary Otieno, whose follow-up effort was hacked away by Samunya.

Despite late pressure from both teams, neither side managed to find the decisive touch, forcing them to settle for a share of the spoils.

The draw leaves Kakamega Homeboyz on 19 points, level with Gor Mahia but sitting second on goal difference, a painful outcome given their bright start and the chances they created.

For KCB, the point is a positive step as they continue their push to steady their campaign, having come off a morale-boosting win over Mara Sugar.
